Just like any other mechanical item you rely on, your central heating boiler is full of moving parts that can break down at anytime with no real warning.
The main reason for getting your boiler serviced every year is to keep it running efficiently, saving you money on expensive heating bills, but did you know that some manufacturer warranties are invalid if you don't have your boiler regularly serviced? by having your boiler serviced yearly you also minimize the risk of it breaking down and extending the lifespan of the boiler, also saving you money in the long run.
When you get your boiler serviced regularly you can be safe in the knowledge that its combusting fuel safely and efficiently, reducing the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
For most people having your boiler breakdown is an inconvenience as it means having to contact a boiler engineer and book them in to fix it, but for more vulnerable people such as the elderly or young children having no heating or hot water can have much harsher consequences. So even if your boiler at home has been serviced make sure that you've checked on any friends and family that could potentially struggle with no hot water or heating.
If you're in a rental property ensure your landlord has kept up to date with their boiler service and landlord gas safety checks. You should have a copy of the gas safety check or CP12 as it's often referred to, if not contact your landlord and ask for a copy. It is the landlords responsibility to get these checks done, but it is for your safety and well being that you should ensure they are up to date.
Make sure to get your boiler serviced before you need to start relying on it. Chances are if you don't keep on top of the servicing it will break down the moment it gets cold and you need the heating on. Generally around this time of year most boiler engineers are inundated with call outs for these types of emergencies and getting hold of someone quickly will prove difficult. If you get your boiler serviced in the warmer months when it's not required as much you will be confident that it will work safely and efficiently when you need it the most.
Servicing your boiler on an annual basis will save you money in the long run with reduced energy bills, less repairs and a longer lifespan which will prolong the day that you'll need a new one.
Why you should get a central heating filter installed.
The main reason behind your boiler failing and breaking down is magnetite or "sludge" that breaks down the heat exchanger and pump on your boiler. This formed inside your central heating system and rusts the components from the inside out, it can also solidify causing blockages in the pipe work, stopping valves from working or your pump from rotating.
Magnetite and limescale are two of the biggest problems when it comes to taking care of your central heating system. Having filters in place to reduce the forming of both can really improve the lifespan of your boiler, radiators and hot water cylinder if you have one.
